We point regularly to the actions taken by other states and warning signs we need to look out for. This time, we just need to look across the river to New York. They’re making the explicit case that the actions the state would need to take to meet their Climate law requirements would be devastating for households.
In a memo put out by the NY State Energy Research and Development Authority, they sound a loud alarm about the impacts that could be coming:
$2.23 more for a gallon of gas? $4,000 more per year per household? On top of the increased costs that families are already shouldering? Just think about that. How can people afford that?
The Governor of New York has already delayed implementation of the law and last week made the direct connection to concerns people have about high energy costs:
New York is taking steps to revise their law. New Jersey needs to pay attention because we have legislators that are still trying to pass bills that would mirror what New York is trying to walk away from.
So if you want to talk to us about affordability, pay attention to what New York is saying and doing to walk back the actions they have taken.
