Look, we get it. No one likes to see energy prices increase. That’s why we’ve been trying to get the attention of policy makers for years, because these are big problems that have been created through policy choices that the state has made. Unfortunately, we continue to see an absence of leadership from those in power who with the ability to make change who have chosen to try to assign blame anywhere but themselves. Frankly, it’s become embarrassing.
At AENJ, we’re not here to defend PJM or anyone else, they can do that themselves. But we are interested in making sure that consumers have the facts about what is really going on with energy in NJ, not talking points they are being fed that are made for clicks on social media or headlines in the news but not based in reality. So in this short video, you can see the FACTS about how much energy we have ourselves versus what we need to get from others:
That’s right, we’re now importing 35% of our energy from other states when under a decade ago we were a net energy exporter. And as you can see from this chart, as the amount of in state base base load energy supply has gone down, the average rate has steadily gone up:
This isn’t as complicated as people are making it. Electricity rates rise as in-state supply falls. We are more dependent on others and have less control over our own destiny. It’s no coincidence.
For the last seven plus years, we’ve been taking generation offline and not replacing it. The bottom line is crystal clear: we need MORE IN-STATE BASE LOAD GENERATION to bring prices under control.
